Fire at Gorewada forest near int’l zoo, animals safe

Nagpur: A massive fire engulfed a section of the forest alongside Balasaheb Thackeray Gorewada International Zoological Park on Thursday, destroying flora and fauna spread over 40-50 hectares.“No animal in the vicinity suffered burns as the inferno was brought under control by firemen, emergency services and foresters. The blaze, which started around noon was doused by 6.30 pm,” S Bhagat divisional forest officer told TOI.The fire raged for six hours after the first sparks flew on both sides of the zoo on Katol Road and flames fanned by strong winds spread swiftly through the forest. “It did not disrupt the safari at the international park,” Bhagat said.The second fire broke out in Sadar’s Karachi Galli at a two-storey building owned by Sohail Ahmed Hafeez Ullakhan at 11.15pm on Wednesday. The fire damaged property and dress material of nearly ₹20 lakh. The exact cause of the fire could not be ascertained, but it was extinguished in time.Also, firemen had to rush to Munda Deul area in Cotton Market area late Wednesday after four 4-wheelers were wrecked after a tree fell. Vehicular traffic too remained affected for several hours, said a fire official. No one was injured in any of the incidents, said officiating chief fire officer BP Chandankhede.
