CMRS flags minor modifications, Cotton Market skywalk set for June opening
Nagpur: After months of delays and shifting deadlines, the long-awaited Cotton Market Metro skywalk is finally nearing completion, with MahaMetro now targeting a June opening following the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) inspection. The Rs10 crore foot over bridge (FoB), built as a second entry and exit point for Cotton Market Metro station, underwent a CMRS inspection recently. During the visit, officials suggested a few minor modifications and protocol-related changes before the structure can be opened to the public. According to MahaMetro officials, the suggested works are currently underway and are expected to be completed shortly."CMRS officials inspected the structure and recommended a few modifications as part of standard operational and safety procedures. The required changes are being carried out and, once completed, the skywalk is expected to open in June," a senior MahaMetro official said. The 120-metre-long skywalk stretches across the centre of Cotton Market Square and connects the metro station to the Lohapul side. Equipped with staircases and lifts, the FoB is expected to significantly improve commuter access and pedestrian safety at one of the busiest intersections in central Nagpur.Located on the Aqua Line between Sitabuldi Interchange and Railway Station, the Cotton Market Metro station sees heavy daily footfall due to its proximity to Nagpur's wholesale vegetable and orange markets. Despite its strategic importance, the station has so far operated with only one entry and exit point.Construction of the FoB began in August 2024 with an initial completion target of August the following year. However, the project witnessed repeated delays, with deadlines first shifting to October and later extending further due to monsoon disruptions, festive-season labour shortages, and pending approvals.Although the physical structure has been ready for over two months, the opening remained stalled awaiting fire clearances and the final CMRS nod. Officials said most of the regulatory process has now been completed, with only the final compliance works remaining.
