11 Die Of Suspected Heatstroke In Just 24 Hours

Nagpur: Unidentified bodies are piling up at hospital mortuaries as Nagpur continues to reel under intense heatwave conditions and of the 14 bodies recovered in last three days, 11 were found on Wednesday alone when the temperature hovered above 45 degrees Celsius for the seventh consecutive day. While five bodies were found at Nagpur railway station and inside unreserved and sleeper coaches of trains, another five were found lying in Lakadganj, Kalamna, Sakkardara and Tajbagh in the last 24 hours. A 75-year-old male patient died at Nagpur Municipal Corporation's cold ward, where patients suffering from hyperpyrexia are treated, taking the toll of suspected heatstroke cases to 11 in 24 hours.While officials said the exact cause of death can be confirmed after autopsy and detailed pathological analysis, the deaths are suspected to be linked to heatstroke as most victims were found in peak afternoon hours.While two unidentified bodies were found on Nagpur railway station premises, three passengers died in trains passing through the city. Railway officials, however, attributed these deaths to illness, extreme heat and suffocation in coaches.On Wednesday, a 65-year-old man was found near a flyover in Lakadganj police limits, and another 50-year-old male's body was retrieved from the APMC fruit market in Kalamna, said police. In Sakkardara, an unidentified man around 50 years was found unconscious near a flyover in Nandanvan, while two more bodies of men aged around 55 and 60 years were later recovered at Tajbagh from near the Sufi shrine and a complex in afternoon.Between May 25 and 26, another three bodies were recovered from different parts of the city, including one near Government Medical College and Hospital, another in his late thirties at Hingna and the third around 45 years of age near Ashok Chowk in Pachpaoli police limits.
