1.5km protection wall to be built along Irai riverbank in Chandrapur
Chandrapur: A 1.5km-long retaining wall will be built along the Irai riverbank in Chandrapur city to safeguard low-lying localities from recurring monsoon flooding. Residents of Rahmat Nagarhave been demanding a retaining wall for many years. The initiative was taken up by former minister and MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar, who conducted a ground inspection of the vulnerable river stretch from Ram Setu to Chaurala Bridge along with civic officials and engineers. The proposed retaining wall is expected to serve as a long-term flood mitigation measure for densely populated areas situated along the city-side riverbank.Residents of Rahmat Nagar, which frequently faces flood threats during heavy rains, repeatedly raised concerns over erosion and rising water levels. Acting on these appeals, AIMIM corporator Azhar Sheikh pursued the matter with Mungantiwar and coordinated with residents to press for a permanent solution.During the inspection, Mungantiwar directed officials to immediately prepare a detailed estimate for the project and finalise the alignment and scope of the proposed wall in consultation with engineers of the concerned departments. He also instructed authorities to include earth-filling work in vulnerable pockets and prepare a comprehensive proposal through the Disaster Management Department.Assuring support for the project, Mungantiwar said the required funds for the cement concrete protection wall and allied flood-control works would be made available once the proposal is finalised.Mayor Sangeeta Khandekar, Deputy Mayor Prashant Danav, Standing Committee Chairperson Mansvi Gire, corporators Rahul Pawde, Azhar Sheikh, Ravi Lonkar and Prajwalant Kadu, along with local residents, were present during the inspection.
