Upa Lokayukta finds serious lapses at girls’ sports hostel

Mysuru: Upa Lokayukta Justice KN Phaneendra on Monday conducted a surprise inspection at the Sports Girls' Hostel run by the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports at Chamundi Vihar.During the inspection, the Upa Lokayukta expressed deep concern over the poor maintenance and lack of necessary facilities provided to the resident sportspersons. Several serious lapses were identified, raising questions about the administration's commitment towards the welfare of student athletes.The premises and hostel surroundings were found to be improperly maintained. It was discovered that snakes entered rooms due to windows lacking protective mesh. Hygiene standards were severely compromised, with bathrooms, toilets, and the water sump found in unhygienic condition.Students also raised complaints regarding poor food quality and alleged discrimination, claiming that senior students received better quality eggs while juniors were served rotten eggs. The indoor stadium, which is being rented for external events, was reportedly cleaned by students when outside organisers failed to do so. The library lacked study materials, and all four available computers remained non-functional for years. The generator installed between the hostels has not worked for nearly two years, and the volleyball court has fallen into disrepair with overgrown grass and no proper markings. Additionally, no programmes have been initiated for the mental and physical development of the athletes.Noting that such negligence is unacceptable—especially in a city known for its cleanliness and civic standards—the Upa Lokayukta observed that officials were not working.A suo motu complaint has been registered to ensure the issues are corrected at the earliest and to hold officials accountable, according to a release.Lokayukta SP (Mysuru division) TJ Udesha, deputy director of DYES (Mysuru) Bhaskar Naik, and warden Netra were present during the inspection. Authorities assured that all issues would be resolved within 2 months, with a compliance report to be submitted.
