MADIKERI: Kushalnagar police seized an ambulance and arrested four residents of

Madikeri

for allegedly transporting

precious stones

mined from nearby forests.

Police, based on information given by informers, intercepted a private ambulance near Madapattan near Kushalnagar on Wednesday night. Even though the driver declined to stop the vehicle stating a patient in critical condition was being taken to Mysuru, police stopped it forcibly. Investigation revealed that precious stones mined from Mekeri were being transported in the ambulance to Mysuru.

"Generally police don't stop ambulances fearing it may create problems for patients. But informers helped us crack this case. The stones were first transported in a goods auto from the dense forest area and then transferred to the a mbulance," police informed.

Police said the men procured the stones from another person. "The forest areas of Kodagu are known for precious stones. The transporters may belong to a bigger gang active in selling precious stones," police said, adding, "The value of the seized precious stones is around Rs 50,000."
