Isha Foundation’s ‘Cauvery Calling’ initiative flagged off in Mysuru
Mysuru: It is an initiative with manifold objectives – conservation of the environment, sustaining rural economy, boosting farmers’ income and saving a waterbody that is the lifeline of South Karnataka. Giving a fillip to agroforestry is the initiative’s core objective. Volunteers of Isha Foundation who will tour the villages in the Cauvery basin and inform the farmers about the benefits of switching to agroforestry, which entails large-scale cultivation of fruiting trees. Cultivation of fruiting trees in lieu of traditional crops will help preserve the richness of the soil, enhance tree cover and ensure unobstructed flow of water to the river – these are among the benefits that the organisation is keen to educate the farmers about.
Isha Foundation volunteer Udaya Ravi said Mandya and Chamarajanagar to create awareness about the depletion of the Cauvery. “Agroforestry will prove beneficial to both farmers and the river. Each van will have four or five volunteers who will distribute pamphlets to farmers, and educate them,” Ravi said.
Lauding Isha Foundation, and
Krishnaraja MLA SA Ramadas, who was at Mysore Palace when the initiative was flagged off, said that it was high time all individuals realised the need to conserve water, besides utilising the resource scientifically. “We have to find a way to check the pollution of the river. Saving the river from pollution is a huge step towards saving the environment. The state and central governments must engage with Isha Foundation, which is meant for the betterment of mankind,” Ramadas said.
