Gautam hostel in Mysuru varsity set for ₹4cr revamp
Mysuru: The 53-year-old Gautam Hostel of the University of Mysore (UoM), which has produced hundreds of bureaucrats, police officers, writers and activists, is all set for a major facelift. The state govt has decided to take up the renovation works of this hostel located in Saraswathipuram at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore.
Students have been complaining about the poor condition of the hostel facilities for a long time. Now, the state govt will take up the renovation works and add several student-friendly facilities.
According to Siddaraju VG, associate professor, UoM, who is also the faculty adviser of the hostel, the UoM registrar MK Savita, a team of PWD officials and others visited the hostel and reviewed the current condition, on Wednesday. “During the visit, an estimation was prepared. A year ago, the proposal of celebrating the golden jubilee of the hostel was mooted. We approached the district minister HC Mahadevappa, and registrar Savita with the idea, including using CSR funds for the hostel’s renovation. However, the minister announced repair works from the department fund," he said.
“Currently, the hostel houses 234 students. During the peak, over 400 students were using the hostel facilities," he said.
The major plans proposed under the govt support include replacing red oxide floor with tiles, renovation of the bathrooms, electric wiring, a study hall, a dedicated hall to conduct programmes for the students, and a compound wall for the hostel," he said.
