Buddha’s teachings must transcend rituals: ADC Aishwarya

Mysuru: Underscoring the enduring relevance of Lord Buddha's philosophy, additional deputy commissioner R Aishwarya on Friday said the Buddha's teachings must transcend ritualistic observances and be woven into every day life to build a just and compassionate society.She was speaking after inaugurating the Buddha Jayanti celebrations organised by the district administration, department of Kannada and culture, Mysuru City Corporation and the Lord Buddha Jayanti Celebration Committee at Kalamandira.Describing Gautama Buddha as a beacon of peace and wisdom, Aishwarya noted that the path of Dhamma offers a framework for achieving social harmony and equality. She observed that Buddha's message continues to guide humanity from ignorance to enlightenment, echoing the timeless ideal of ‘Tamasoma Jyotirgamaya."Highlighting the transformative impact of these teachings, she said BR Ambedkar drew deeply from Buddhist principles in his fight for social justice and equality, laying the foundation for a progressive and inclusive Constitution.In his keynote address, Kalyanasiri Bhanteji of Vishwa Maitri Buddha Vihara stressed that true peace begins within. He urged individuals to overcome anger, jealousy and hatred, and embrace the Panchsheel principles — truthfulness, non-violence and abstinence from intoxicants — as the pillars of a disciplined life. True devotion to Buddha, he added, lies not in idol worship but in practising his values in daily conduct.The 2570th Buddha Purnima (Vesak Day) was celebrated with grandeur by the Mahabodhi Maitri Mandala in collaboration with the department of Kannada and culture and Vishwa Maitri Buddha Vihara. A peace walk for world harmony was organised from Town Hall to Kalamandira, led by MLA TS Srivatsa, with the participation of monks, dignitaries and hundreds of devotees, reflecting a collective commitment to peace and unity.
