MUMBAI: A 40-year-old woman, who had arrived from Kenya at the CSMI airport on Saturday, was arrested on charges of gold smuggling. The Customs officials recovered gold concealed in her inner wear and on her person collectively weighing 3.4 kg estimated to be worth Rs 1.63 crore.
Arrested accused Sahra Mohammed Omar, a resident of Mongai street, Nairobi in Kenya, has been sent to 14-day judicial custody. On the basis of profiling and suspicion, the personnel of Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs intercepted Omar near the exit gate of Custom arrival baggage hall after she crossed the green channel and was proceeding towards exit gate. Omar, who was holding a passport issued by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, had come from Nairobi to Mumbai. At least 22 KT gold melted bars (17 pieces) and 21 KT gold assorted jewellery were recovered from her.
