Thane housing societies face severe water crisis
Thane: Prominent societies in Thane are coughing up anywhere between Rs 20-85 lakh on tankers, adding to the financial burden on the management due to the failed water management of the Thane Municipal Corporation, Thane BJP MLA Sanjay Kelkar alleged.
Kelkar, who interacted with representatives from several plush housing societies located along the Ghodbunder Highway, has now written to Deputy Chief Minister and Guardian minister Eknath Shinde, seeking immediate and concrete measures to resolve the burning issue of water scarcity faced by these enclaves.
“The water scarcity has worsened in Thane, with some societies along the Ghodbunder area spending crores of rupees annually on water tankers. Few representatives of societies said they are spending anywhere between ₹20-85 lakh each on tankers. Worse, in many areas, tankers are unavailable for up to three consecutive days, leaving residents harried. I have requested our Guardian minister Eknath Shinde to immediately convene a joint meeting of the concerned departments and take concrete action,” he said.
Meanwhile, the current water shortage in the Andhra and Barvi reservoirs, and the possibility of below-average rainfall in the upcoming season, has prompted the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to enforce water supply cuts till Aug 31, 2026, said a statement issued by the Thane corporation.
In addition, repair, maintenance and upgradation work on the pipelines at the Jambhul Water Treatment Centre will impact water supply for 24 hours starting Thursday, May 21, afternoon to Mumbra, Diva, Kalwa, Majiwada-Manpada and parts of Wagle Estate.
