Mumbai’s great transformation: From old foundations to modern skyline

Mumbai, the city of dreams, is undergoing one of India’s most ambitious urban renewal missions. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, MHADA’s large-scale redevelopment initiative is reshaping the very fabric of the metropolis — replacing century-old, unsafe housing blocks with secure, sustainable, and well-planned modern homes. The transformation aims not just at new buildings but at building a new lifestyle, stronger communities, and a safer tomorrow for millions of Mumbaikars. (Photo credits: MHADA)

Government committed to dignified home for every citizen

The Maharashtra government has reaffirmed its pledge to ensure that every citizen has access to a dignified, affordable, and modern home. Over the past seven decades, MHADA has delivered nearly 9 lakh homes across Maharashtra, including 2.5 lakh in Mumbai alone. With 56 of its 114 colonies now set for urgent renewal, MHADA has been empowered as a Special Planning Authority (SPA) to accelerate approvals and execution. This transformation is not only rebuilding homes—it’s restoring faith and giving Mumbai a stronger, safer foundation for its future. (Photo credits: MHADA)

Motilal Nagar, Goregaon West: 143-acre model of inclusive growth

The transformation of Motilal Nagar in Goregaon West is one of Mumbai’s largest redevelopment stories. Spanning 143 acres, this project will rebuild 3,372 homes, 328 commercial establishments, and 1,600 slum units into a thriving modern township featuring community zones, a five-acre central park, and upgraded urban amenities. Set to be completed by 2029, Motilal Nagar represents a new model of integrated urban living where residents from all backgrounds can coexist in safety, comfort, and opportunity. BDD chawls redevelopment: Preserving heritage, building future

Built in the 1920s, the BDD Chawls at Worli, Naigaon, and NM Joshi Marg have been a symbol of Mumbai’s resilience for generations. Now, they are being transformed into modern 2BHK apartments, giving over 16,000 families ownership rights, open spaces, and access to community amenities. This monumental redevelopment project aims to retain the spirit of Mumbai’s working-class heritage while delivering safe, dignified, and well-equipped homes that reflect the aspirations of today’s urban India. Kamathipura: Reviving Mumbai’s historic core with dignity and scale

The Kamathipura redevelopment project is a landmark in Mumbai’s housing history. Spanning nearly 28 acres and covering lanes 1 to 15, it will rehouse 8,001 residents, compensate 800 landowners, and rebuild 943 cessed buildings into state-of-the-art high-rises reaching up to 78 floors. The initiative aims to restore dignity and safety to one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods, replacing precarious housing with secure, sustainable, and high-rise urban communities. Siddharth Nagar and Punjabi Colony: Restoring trust, pride, and stability

MHADA’s commitment to equitable growth shines through in the Siddharth Nagar (Patra Chawl) and Punjabi Colony (GTB Nagar) projects. In Goregaon West, residents are receiving 650 sq. ft. modern flats with lifts, gardens, and community halls. In Sion, 1,200 Punjabi and Sindhi families displaced years ago are finally moving into spacious 635 sq. ft. homes built across 25 redeveloped buildings. These landmark initiatives bring an end to decades of uncertainty, ensuring every family can now live with security, pride, and belonging. (Photo credits: MHADA)

PMGP Colony, Jogeshwari: Rebuilding dreams with the Prime Minister’s Grant Project

The PMGP Colony in Jogeshwari, built under the Prime Minister’s Grant Project in the 1990s, is being reborn under MHADA’s stewardship. Covering 27,625 square meters, the project will deliver 984 modern flats of 450 sq. ft., replacing crumbling 180 sq. ft. tenements. This redevelopment brings dignity back to residents’ lives while exemplifying how government intervention can revive stalled projects, protect tenants, and modernize aging neighbourhoods. Building the Mumbai of tomorrow: Sustainable, smart, and inclusive

Mumbai’s transformation extends beyond housing. MHADA’s initiatives integrate Green Building standards, renewable energy, and digital transparency to build communities that are both future-ready and environmentally conscious. Supported by mega-infrastructure projects like Atal Setu, Coastal Road, Navi Mumbai Airport, Metro lines, and Samruddhi Mahamarg, the city is being reimagined as a global, sustainable metropolis—where every citizen can live with comfort, opportunity, and pride.
