Authorities seized a total of Rs 24.4 lakh in cash from two cars and in a raid on a businessman in the
Mumbai Metropolitan Region
on Thursday and Friday.
Four people travelling in a car were detained with Rs 12 lakh in the early hours of Friday in
Sewri
, said the Election Commission. The EC statement said the police intercepted a tourist vehicle around 2.30 am and found the cash in a bag in it, following which the four occupants were taken to the police station.
While one of the persons detained, identified as Zuber Samiullah Khan, said the money was for his business purposes, he failed to give satisfactory answers on its background.
Income tax authorities were informed about the seizure.
The three others in the car were identified as Syed Shahbaz Mohammad Shah Alam, Yusuf Usman Sheikh and Akbar Salim Pathan.
