MUMBAI: Following a demand by MLCs including Congress's Bhai Jagtap and BJP's Pravin Darekar, Maharashtra excise minister Shamburaje Desai on Wednesday ordered a probe into transfers in the excise department and said that action would be take in the case of four excise inspectors if there is any substance in the complaints raised by the MLCs.
Jagtap and Darekar alleged that four excise inspectors were posted in the same (Mumbai and Konkan) divisions for 12 years, which is in violation of the norm of a maximum posting of nine years. "These four inspectors are a law unto themselves and have said that they have made 'arrangements for everyone' so no one can do anything to them. We have a standard norm for transfers every three years and there is an order issued by the excise commissioner that there must be a transfer outside the division after nine years," Jagtap said, naming the inspectors.
Darekar demanded that the state government get an inquiry conducted by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) against the four inspectors. "They are harassing people who have legal licences," Darekar said.
Sena (UBT) MLC and opposition leader in the Legislative Council Ambadas Danve said, "Are these four inspectors the sons-in-law of the government? Why is the minister defending them? If they have completed more than nine years in one division, they must be shunted out."
