MUMBAI: Following a demand from Maha Vikas Aghadi MLCs for a caste-based census in Maharashtra, and legislative council's deputy chairperson Neelam Gorhe's directions to the state government to clarify its stand and announce its policy on having a caste-based census soon, deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the state government will study the caste based census being conducted by the Bihar government and a decision will be taken after that.

Fadnavis also announced that schemes will be prepared for economically backward people in the open category.

"The central government said the state should conduct a caste-wise census. The Bihar government is conducting a caste-wise census. We will send a committee to look into the ongoing caste-wise census in Bihar. This committee will study it. This matter needs to be studied very carefully," Fadnavis told the council.

"We will get information about how Bihar has done the caste-wise census. We will study if the formula used by Bihar can be applied here. If the same formula cannot be applied here, we will see what can be done in Maharashtra and take a decision accordingly," Fadnavis said.

Last month, leader of Opposition Ajit Pawar demanded that the government carry out a caste-based census.-
