Mumbai–Surat suburban services in planning

Western Railway is exploring long-term suburban-style train operations between Mumbai and Surat to cater to growing commuter demand, aiming to enhance intercity travel convenience and frequency along the busy corridor.

2/7

Surat station redevelopment to support operations

Two new platforms are being added at Surat station under a Rs 1,477-crore redevelopment project. These platforms will enable future suburban services once construction is completed by 2027.

Namo Bharat trains under consideration

4/7

Vande Metro as a regional option

Vande Metro trains, built on the Vande Bharat platform, could replace existing MEMUs. These self-propelled trains are ideal for short intercity travel, offering metro-like standing and seating options for high-density passengers.

5/7

Passenger capacity and speed of Vande Metro

A 12-coach Vande Metro rake can carry approximately 1,150 seated and 2,058 standing passengers. With a maximum speed of 130 km/h, it is suitable for regional suburban travel while maintaining comfort.

6/7

Upgraded MEMU trains to be used

Instead of conventional EMU locals, future services are likely to use upgraded MEMU trains, designed for longer distances and equipped with passenger amenities such as onboard toilets for comfort.

7/7

Existing MEMU and long-distance services

Currently, the Virar–Surat MEMU and long-distance trains connect the two cities. Officials say this demonstrates latent commuter demand, paving the way for more frequent and commuter-oriented train services.
