On Monday evening, IMD upgraded its weather alert for Mumbai and Raigad to ‘red’, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. The ‘red’ alert is till Tuesday 8.30am.

The 15-year highest rainfall for the month is 375.2mm on July 2, 2019, while the all-time record is 944.2 mm when Mumbai experienced a deluge on July 26, 2005.

On Sunday night, IMD had issued a ‘yellow’ alert, indicating heavy rain activity at isolated places for 24 hours, but Mumbai saw intense downpour between 2.30am and 5.30am. An IMD official said that an offshore trough strengthened around 12.30am, bringing in the heavy rainfall. “There was no weather system in place to issue an orange or red alert. The rainfall activity was received in a very brief period,” said the official.

IMD recordings show that till 2.30am, IMD Santacruz observatory recorded 40.9mm rain, which surged to 210.9mm by 5.30am. The remaining 57mm was recorded between 5.30am and 8.30am. In the morning, IMD upgraded its warning for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar to ‘orange’, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning and gusty winds at isolated places. By evening, the alert was revised to ‘red’ as a “cloud patch over Raigad moved to Mumbai”. “This gave IMD Colaba observatory 134.8mm of rain between 8.30am and 8.30pm. It had recorded 84mm rainfall in the 24-hour period ending Monday 8.30am,” said an official. In the 12-hour period ending 8.30pm Monday, IMD Santacruz observatory received 72.2mm rainfall. The total rainfall recorded by Santacruz observatory this season so far is 734.8mm, of which more than one-third was received on Sunday and Monday.

According to BMC’s automatic weather station data, the areas that recorded above 300mm of rain were Powai (327mm) and Andheri (303mm). Other areas in the MMR recorded comparatively lesser rainfall, including Thane 128mm, Bhiwandi 32mm, Ambernath 27mm, and Kalyan 24mm, Ulhasnagar 24mm, and Shahapur 12mm.
