I-T searches in Maharashtra, Delhi & UP in BMC Covid scam

MUMBAI: The income-tax investigation wing searched several premises in Mumbai and other locations on Monday in connection with the BMC's Covid scam, mainly the alleged supply of oxygen at inflated rates.

The search operation, which will continue for a few more days, included premises of Romin Chheda's company Highway Construction Company and its associate entities. I-T sources said the search will be largely carried out in Mumbai and a few places in Pune, Delhi and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh.

During the pandemic, the BMC awarded the oxygen procurement and supply work to Highway Construction. Chheda was asked to supply oxygen to hospitals and field Covid centres. It was alleged that Chheda sub-contracted the work to his paper company, which eventually purchased the oxygen and required equipment from a Delhi-based supplier.

The Delhi supplier allegedly raised the bill in the name of the paper company, which subsequently raised inflated bills in the name of the company through which Chheda bagged the BMC contract. Chheda submitted this bill to the BMC and received a Rs 140 crore payment.
