Heavy rainfall lashes parts of Mumbai; IMD issues red & orange alerts, traffic disruptions, flood warnings
NEW DELHI: Heavy rain lashed parts of Mumbai on Sunday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert for the city. The weather office forecast a generally cloudy sky with periods of heavy rain.
The alert also extended to Thane and Palghar districts, while Raigad was placed under an orange alert for the day. On Saturday, a red alert was in place for Palghar, with Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad under an orange alert.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Saturday’s rainfall measured 6.80 mm in the island city, 11.53 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 7.42 mm in the western suburbs between 8 am and 10 pm.
Meanwhile, in Madhya Pradesh, torrential rains led to the submergence of the Jogitikariya bridge on the Dindori–Jabalpur road, as the Narmada River overflowed. Traffic on both sides was diverted, and rescue teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Home Guards, and local police were deployed at the site. Dindori Sub-Divisional Police Officer Satish Dwivedi confirmed the bridge closure and ongoing safety measures.
The IMD on Saturday issued a red alert for Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Goa, warning of intense rainfall and lightning in several districts. A developing depression over east Madhya Pradesh and north Chhattisgarh, moving westwards at 12 km/h, was centred late Saturday night near Umaria in Madhya Pradesh. It is expected to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure system by Sunday.
In Madhya Pradesh, red alerts were issued for North Seoni, Mandla/Kanha, South Khandwa, and South Khargone. In Maharashtra, Nanded, Parbhani, and Hingoli districts were also placed under red alert, with high chances of cloud-to-ground lightning.
Orange alerts for moderate rain and possible lightning were also issued for parts of east Madhya Pradesh, south Chhattisgarh, southeast Uttar Pradesh (including Kanpur), east Rajasthan, south Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra, south Kerala, south Punjab, south Haryana, and Gangetic West Bengal.
