Navi Mumbai airport’s first look

The highly anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) prepares to open in late May 2025, offering passengers an alternative to the crowded Mumbai airport. With modern facilities and expanded capacity, NMIA is set to take over as the region’s main airport in the coming years.

2/7

Mumbai airport T2 expansion

Mumbai's Terminal 2 is set for an expansion to accommodate 45 million passengers per year. This adjustment will ease congestion as flights from NMIA begin to operate, allowing better handling of domestic and international traffic.

3/7

T1 transfer to NMIA

Approximately 10 million passengers currently using Mumbai’s Terminal 1 will shift to Navi Mumbai’s Terminal 1 by October 2025. This shift is expected to alleviate congestion at Mumbai's busy terminals, improving air traffic flow.

4/7

Private aircraft shifting to Navi Mumbai

General aviation flights, including private and charter aircraft, will move to the new Navi Mumbai airport. This transition will ease air traffic congestion at the current Mumbai airport, enhancing on-time performance and efficiency.

5/7

Mumbai vs. Navi Mumbai: Future outlook

While Mumbai airport will remain the primary hub for MMR, the newly built Navi Mumbai airport is poised to surpass it within the decade. By 2032, it will become the region's main airport with expanded terminals and additional runways.

6/7

Growth of Navi Mumbai airport

Navi Mumbai airport's Terminal 1 is expected to reach its full capacity of 20 million passengers per year by mid-2026. Terminal 2, with a capacity of 30 million, will further bolster the airport's capabilities, shaping the future of air travel in MMR.

7/7

Mumbai airport's decline

Mumbai airport, unable to expand due to land constraints, will gradually cede its status as MMR’s busiest airport to Navi Mumbai. By 2032, the Navi Mumbai airport is projected to handle over 90 million passengers, positioning it as the region’s dominant airport.

And after few decades , there will be 3rd Mumbai by cutting down the trees, bringing down the hills and diverting the rivers. And there will be another airport. After that again 4th Mumbai and it would continue like this. Then one big flash flood would come wiping out the entire city.
