MUMBAI: The much-awaited onset of

southwest monsoon

was declared over Mumbai on Monday. The onset of rains in the city, however, was delayed by two days from its normal date of June 10.

While the advancement of the monsoon has been slow, rains have slowly covered parts of the region, said weathermen at the IMD.

Confirming the arrival of the rains, K S Hosalikar, deputy director-general, western region, IMD, said that the monsoon has arrived in Mumbai and up to Valsad, also covering parts of central Maharashtra and Marathwada.

Significant rains have been recorded in the last 24 hours in many parts of Mumbai. The rainfall recorded by IMD at Colaba was 94mm and 70.6 mm at Santacruz. The IMD has forecast moderate rains in Mumbai city and suburbs in the next 24 hours and heavy rainfall at some places as well.

Since June 1, the total rainfall recorded by the IMD Colaba observatory has been 188.2mm (81 mm above normal), in case of IMD Santacruz it is 151 m (50.1mm above normal).
