Construction triggered mudslide at Vile Parle, residents at risk: Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad

MUMBAI: A mudslide was reported on Monday in Vile Parle (East) right at the entrance of National India Block LIC Society at Nehru Road.

Local Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad said the incident has put the lives of several families residing here at risk.

“According to locals, the mudslide occured due to deep digging and excavation being carried out by the builder of a neighbouring SRA project. According to them, the piling foundation at the underconstruction site caved in amid heavy rain, resulting in the collapse of the society’s compound wall and the subsequent mudslide,” Gaikwad said.

Several building residents left the premises fearing the structure would crash.

A local at the site said the incident has raised concerns about safety measures in place at construction sites, especially during monsoon when the risk of such incidents is higher. “The authorities need to ensure that proper precautions are taken to prevent such incidents and protect the lives and property of residents in the area,” said a local resident.

Manish Walunj, assistant municipal commissioner of K-East ward, said, “Work of shore piling was being carried out at the underconstruction building site when the mudslide occurred and the compound wall of the adjoining building also crashed. We have informed the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) to safeguard the entire area. We have also asked them to get a structural engineer to certify the stability of the site.”

Gaikwad alleged that connivance of the builder with officials was responsible for the incident. “Locals here are worried about their safety. While the affected families have been evacuated temporarily, my office has spoken to assistant commissioner Manish Walunj and demanded that concrete steps must be immediately taken to protect the lives and properties of local residents as well as workers at the site. I’ve also demanded a detailed investigation into the matter and that there should be a stay on the builder’s construction work till such inquiry is completed,” said Gaikwad.
