Civil engineer dies after fall at Malad construction site due to lack of safety measures

Mumbai: A civil engineer, Omkar Sankhe (24), from Borivli West, died after falling from the tenth floor of an under-construction SRA building site in Malad on July 7. The Malad police registered a first information report (FIR) against Shree Jee Builders and Developers, owner Nimesh Desai, his partners, and the site supervisor for alleged negligence in not providing safety gear on Tuesday based on Sankhe's father complaint.Sankhe, who had joined the builder as a junior site engineer four months ago, was inspecting the project at 10 am when he proceeded to the tenth floor for an inspection at 5.45 pm. According to the FIR filed by his father, Vinod (64), Sankhe was not provided with safety gear during the inspection. While walking on an iron walkway plank, he fell to the sixth floor, sustaining serious head and body injuries. His colleagues rushed him to Zenith Hospital in Malad West, where he was pronounced dead at 6.15 pm. Sankhe's father stated, "At 5.45 pm, my son went to the 10th floor of the construction site for an inspection. During the inspection, he was not provided with any safety gears. While walking on an iron walkway plank, he fell from the walkway from the 10th floor to the 6th floor, sustaining serious injuries to his head and body. His colleagues rushed him to Zenith Hospital in Malad West."A police officer from the Malad police station said, "The deceased's father has filed a complaint against Shree Jee Builders and Developers, owner Nimesh Desai, his partners, and the site supervisor. Following this, Nimesh Desai, his partners, and the site supervisor were booked on Tuesday for Sankhe's death. The probe is on and action will be initiated." The officer added that the walkway plank was not properly fixed and left unsupported on one side of the slab. "We have sought details from the expert before initiating action," the officer stated.
