MUMBAI: In two separate operations, officials of the air intelligence unit (AIU) on Saturday and Sunday arrested an Indian national and three Kenyan nationals for allegedly smuggling gold in India and seized the smuggled gold worth Rs 5.84 crore from them.

In the first case, the AIU officials intercepted a Mumbai resident Amit Jain (46) who had arrived at the CSMT airport from Dubai. During the personal search, the officials recovered 24 KT 44 bars. The total bars weighed 5,127 grams and were worth Rs 3.24 crore. Jain told officials that he had purchased the gold from Dubai and wanted to sell it in the local market in India to make profit.

In another operation, three Kenyan nationals _ Samira Abdi (37), Feiza Hassan (25) and Fardowsa Abdi (30) _ who arrived at CSMT airport from Addis Ababa, approached the red channel counter in arrival hall, Terminal 2, stating that they wanted to declare the gold items which they were carrying. In the declaration from, they mentioned the total quantity of gold as 2.540 kg. However, it was found that the gold weight was in excess of what they declared. Officials found the actual weight of the gold was 3.018 kg. Personal search of Samira resulted in the recovery of 11 god bars which she had hidden in her inner wears. The two other women admitted that they had given the gold to Samira for concealing. They were found smuggling a total of 22KT gold melted bars having a net weight of 4,483 grams worth Rs 2.6 crore. They told the officials that they had purchased the gold from a person in Nairobi on credit and wanted to sell it in the local market in India to make profit.

All the four accused persons, arrested in two cases, were produced before a court on Sunday and sent in judicial custody.
