MUZAFFARNAGAR: More than 6,000 voters in Muzaffarnagar district stayed away from polling booths on Friday to protest against "lack of roads in their village". Some of the villagers are currently sitting on a hunger strike.
"Villagers of Tanheda boycotted polls to protest lack of construction on 5km road stretch connecting their place with the state highway," said Khurram Aziz, village head, adding the village has around 15,000 people with over 6,000 eligible voters. "Public Works Department is responsible for this road. We made numerous applications in past. No one took cognisance," Aziz said.
Pritam Singh, a villager, said that children were facing difficulties while going school. "Even ambulances and police are unable to reach on time. DM, SDM and senior police officers came to pacify locals... Only 12 people from the village voted till noon," said Ranveer Singh, another villager.
