MEERUT: Scrap, including unused tyres, wheels, drums and iron rods, which were lying unused in Meerut nagar nigam, were painted with bright colours and used in beautifying the intersection and parks across the Meerut city under the ‘Kabaad se Jugaad’ campaign launched by the nagar nigam this July.

Additional municipal commissioner, Pramod Kumar, said, "The campaign is the brainchild of municipal commissioner Amit Pal Sharma, whereas Sharma calls the campaign an outcome of rounds of discussion with employees and officers of the Nagar Nigam."

“Under the campaign, non-recyclable items, such as metal scraps, plastic waste, old tyres, e-junk and several other goods have been converted into beautiful structures and these structures were used for beautification of the intersections and parks of the city," said Sharma, adding that, “A fountain from scrap iron, old wheels has been built at Gandhi Ashram intersection, Garh Road. Likewise, an illuminating light-tree has been made from old iron rods at the circuit house intersection.”

In addition, old waste drums were painted and converted into big tree pots. These were used for street installation. Also, display walls from old JCB tyres were laid out. Sharma further said that scrap was lying in a junk store of nagar nigam. He said that this campaign is an example of how public places can be beautified at low cost by using scrap. “The mention of Meerut’s 'Kabaad se Jugaad' campaign by PM in ‘Mann ki Baat' has infused new energy in the corporation," he said.
