2 held for ‘pressuring family to convert to Christianity’ in Shamli
Shamli: Shamli police have arrested two men from Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar on charges of attempting to pressurise a family into converting to Christianity. The accused, identified as Monu Singh, 34, and Rajnish Kumar, 35, were allegedly found in possession of a religious book, a diary, an ID card related to the faith, and a mobile phone. "We are investigating the involvement of other group members. Necessary action will be taken against them," superintendent of police (SP), Shamli, Ramsevak Gautam, said. On Friday, the two accused visited the house of Kusum Pal in Ambehta Yakubpur village. Her grandson had been suffering from a prolonged illness. They allegedly offered financial aid for medical treatment "if the family agreed to convert to Christianity", said police. However, the family resisted the conversion attempts and alerted the police. Following their complaint, both men were arrested. Thanabhawan station house officer Virendra Kumar said, "A case has been registered under sections 3 and 5(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021, and legal action has been initiated against the accused."
