Muzaffarnagar/Ghaziabad: A few hours after their marriage was solemnized at the bride’s house in Ghaziabad, the couple left on Friday for the groom’s native place in Muzaffarnagar.

They were an hour’s drive away from their destination when tragedy struck them on NH-58 in Meerut.
Mohammad Shahzeb, 22, standing outside the emergency room of Muzaffarnagar Medical College where her newlywed wife’s body had been kept, said he had been very busy in the past 2-3 days and couldn’t talk to her properly.

“I wish I’d known we would never get a chance to speak about so many things we had planned to,” he said, letting out a deep breath.

“She was very excited about the wedding and wanted to look her best at the ceremony,” Shahzeb said.

Recounting the final moments, he said, “Even before we could gather anything, I saw a man pointing a gun at my brother-in-law who was sitting in the front seat of the car. We heeded to their demands and gave away all the jewellery and cash we had.”

“But when one of the robbers pointed a gun at me, Parveen screamed in fear. They instantly shot her in the chest. Maybe, because they feared her scream would attract attention from passersby at the busy stretch of the highway,” Shahzeb said, looking the other way as his eyes welled up.

In Ghaziabad, Parveen’s father, 40-year-old Mohammad Farman, said, “I sent my beloved daughter to her husband’s place on Friday and then to her final resting place on Saturday.”

“She was so happy that she would herself break into a jig whenever music played during the ceremony and we had to ask her to stop,” he said, adding “she was just 18 after all”.

The family buried her body at her native Nahal village of Ghaziabad on Saturday.
