MANGALURU: With a video of a woman being carried in a makeshift ‘doli’ (palanquin) by two men, to reach the nearest road going viral, panchayat officials visited the spot, and inspected the road on Saturday.

Kamala,70, fractured her leg, and her neighbours in Ballakka in Noojibalthila in Kadaba, were forced to carry her for half-a-kilometre, as the private road connecting to the main road is not motorable.

Noojibalthila PDO Guruva S, who visited the spot along with panchayat members, said the road to Ballakka village is motorable, and that jeeps and other vehicles ply on the stretch. “There is about a 500m stretch from the house of Kamala, which is private land, to the main road. The video was probably recorded when they were carrying her on that stretch,” he said.

Kamala’s son Gangadhar Ballaka, said that the village faces problems during the monsoon.

Gangadhar said that his mother was carried for about half-a-kilometre in a makeshift doli, to reach the main road, to take her to Uppinangady, which is around 35km away from the village, on Friday.

“Private vehicles refuse to travel on the stretch during the evening, due to the fear of elephant attack. There are 20 houses in the village,” he said.
