Rly stn road to be named after freedom fighter

Mangaluru: The road to Mangaluru Central Railway Station is all set to be named after freedom fighter Ammembala Balappa.The council of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has sent a proposal in this regard, submitted by former mayor Diwakar Pandeshwar, to the standing committee on town planning. Ammembala Balappa, who was born on February 23,1922, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi took part in the freedom struggle during the Quit India Movement in 1942. Diwakar said that the proposal has already been cleared by the MCC council and the same will be processed as per the guidelines of government circular. “He hailed from a rural family in Bantwal and was an inspiration for the youth. He actively participated in the freedom struggle and also took up several initiatives for the welfare of the poor and Dalits. He founded the first Tulu publication ‘Tulu Siri’ in 1970 and he played a key role in the drafting of land reforms law during the tenure of D Devaraj Urs government,” Diwakar said. As per the government circular of 2006, the proposal will be verified by MCC’s standing committee on town planning. Later, it will be published in newspapers to invite objections and suggestions and the same will be sent to the government for approval through the council, he added.

The Chandigarh BJP president and office bearers of the Freedom Fighters Successor Association met with Chandigarh administrator Banwarilal Purohit to demand benefits for the children of freedom fighters, including 2% reservation in government jobs and free medical treatment in main hospitals. Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to freedom fighter Bhagat Singh on his birth anniversary, highlighting his sacrifice and dedication to India's freedom. In Tamil Nadu, the BJP has called a meeting to discuss the situation after the AIADMK's exit from the NDA alliance. Lastly, an air show featuring 65 fighter planes and helicopters of the Indian Air Force will take place in Bhopal on September 30 as part of the IAF's 91st Foundation Day celebration.
