Sanction maximum sports funds to govt colleges: MU syndicate
Mangaluru: The Mangalore University Syndicate body, during a recent meeting, urged the varsity to sanction maximum funds collected as sports fees from students, to government colleges. The university collects Rs 800 from each student as sports fee every year. However, there is a complaint that it sanctions only Rs 400 per student to colleges to host or send their students to sports and related events. The syndicate members asked for a review with the Sports Advisory Committee of the university, and to sanction maximum funds to help sportspersons.Syndicate member Raghuraj, who raised the question with concerned authorities during the meeting held this week, said that private colleges are able to manage their sports expenses somehow, however, it is not at all possible for government colleges. They have to rely on sports fee funds sanctioned from the university. MU which had collected Rs 700 sports fee last academic year per student, has increased it to Rs 800. The colleges are sanctioned for only Rs 400 per student. As a result, government colleges are finding it difficult to organise any sports event, and send their students to participate in regional and zonal tournaments. "Therefore, during the meeting, I have asked the university to review the current arrangements and come up with a concrete plan. While doing the plan, they are also asked to consider the current financial conditions of the university," said Raghuraj, adding that their aim is to help sportspersons.Pending salaries being clearedDuring the recent syndicate meeting, the university has informed that pending salaries of guest faculty and non-teaching staff have been cleared to a certain extent. "There are pending salaries for one month only at the moment," a syndicate member shared.
