MANGALORE: Mayor Praveen conducted elections to the four standing committees of Mangalore City Corporation here on Friday, 11-days after he was elected to the post.
A consensus among ruling BJP and principal opposition party Congress ensured that the elections to the four committees comprising seven members each was unanimous, with five BJP members and two Congress members elected to each of the committees.

Members elected to the standing committee on taxation, finance and appeals are Nagendra Kumar and Gretta Rebello (Congress), Sharath Kumar, Sarojini Kotian, Surekha Srinivas, James DSouza, and Vijaykumar Shetty. Standing committee on health, education and social justice consists of K B K Vijayalakshmi, and Naveen D'Souza (Congress), and Yashavant Meenakaliya, Ashwin Kumar, Amita Kala, Revathi K, and Sumithra Karia.
Bhaskar K, and Harinath (Congress), Premanand Shetty, P Mohan Kumar, Bhaskarchandra Shetty, Shakuntala D Karkera, and Jayanand Anchan are the new members of the standing committee on town planning and improvement (works committee). Mamatha Shenoy, and Gulzar Banu (Congress), Rajashri, Ranganath Kini, Santosh Kumar, Madhu Kiran and Prema Muralidhar were elected to the accounts committee.
Normally, elections to the standing committees are held along with the election of the mayor and the deputy mayor. However, lack of clarity on who should conduct the election to the standing committees this time meant that the mayor had to convene a special meeting specifically for the purpose. The chairpersons of each of these four standing committees will be elected within a week, MCC officials stated.
The ruling BJP has finalized names of the corporators who will head these committees. Sharath Kumar will head the standing committee on taxation, finance and appeals, Yashvanth standing committee on health, education and social justice, Premanand Shetty, standing committee on town planning and development, and Rajashri, standing committee on accounts. Sudheer Shetty Kannur is the chief whip of the ruling party.
