Waste dumping mars key highways in Madurai

Madurai: Large quantities of garbage are being dumped along stretches of the Madurai–Rameswaram Highway, causing foul odour and posing risks to motorists.Waste, including plastic covers, packaging material, paper plates and food leftovers from nearby eateries, has been found at multiple points between Viraganur junction and the Rameswaram Highway bridge. Construction and demolition (C&D) debris is also piled up along sections of the road. On the opposite side, food waste and disposable plates allegedly discarded by hotels and butcher shops have accumulated in several spots. Residents said the dumping has become a recurring issue. "The waste attracts stray dogs and cattle, creating a traffic hazard for speeding vehicles," a resident said. Similar dumping of C&D debris and plastic waste was noticed along parts of the Madurai–Sivaganga Highway and, to a lesser extent, on the Melur Highway. Sanitation workers said clearing meat and food waste along busy highways is challenging due to the volume and location of the garbage. Parking heavy vehicles for long hours on the roadside is difficult, forcing workers to remove waste manually. A senior corporation official said cleaning operations are underway along the Madurai–Rameswaram stretch within city limits.
