‘Parents of special children need moral, emotional support’
Cleared/280 Words Madurai: Parents who dedicate their lives to caring for their children with special needs are often overlooked, and therefore it is essential to have a support group that can strengthen and guide them through the unique challenges they face, president of Madurai Group Living Foundation (MGLF), M Chandrasekar, said.He was taking in a special counselling programme held for parents of special children on Saturday at the Corporation Special Children Park near Lotus Tank in Madurai. The event, organised by the MGLF, REACT, and AROGYA Trust in collaboration with the Madurai corporation, saw the participation of around 60 parents. The programme aimed to provide support and guidance to parents who care for children with special needs throughout their lives."While many are aware of the counselling available for special children, the parents, who take care of them for their entire lives, also require moral and emotional support," he said.Chandrasekar also highlighted the need for the creation of special facilities for adults over the age of 18 who continue to struggle with developmental and mental health issues. "As children with special needs grow into adults, their challenges often increase, and their parents, too, need a dedicated space where they can receive continued support," he added.Ramar Pandi, coordinator of AROGYA Trust, mentioned that 12 psychologists, specialised in working with special children and their families, were brought in to conduct the session. "We will work closely with these families to offer ongoing assistance in any way possible," he added.Corporation commissioner C Dinesh Kumar inspected the session and interacted with both the parents and the organisers. He expressed his support for such initiatives that focus on the well-being of both children and their caregivers.
