TANSCHE clarifies on common syllabus

Madurai: Tamil Nadu State Council For Higher Education (TANSCHE) issued a statement on Thursday, reiterating that universities and autonomous colleges have the freedom to change only 25% of the TANSCHE common syllabus being implemented in the state.
TANSCHE member-secretary Dr S Krishnasamy said in a statement that considering the educational, research, skill development, and employability needs of students, a total of 298 syllabi, including 163 UG syllabi, and 135 PG syllabi, that will have equivalence were framed with the approval of the university board of studies. It was being implemented from the academic year 2023-2024 onwards. “Universities and autonomous colleges have the freedom to change 25% of this syllabus and this syllabus is being welcomed by many institutions,” he said.
TANSCHE’s clarification comes in the wake of a claim from the Joint Action Council of College Teachers (JAC), Tamil Nadu that TANSCHE had conveyed to them during talks that the new common syllabus is not ‘mandatory’ and was only a ‘model’. JAC convener Dr M Nagarajan said he was surprised to see such a statement from TANSCHE now. “We clearly put forth our concerns during the meeting with TANSCHE. This is not acceptable. A meeting of the JAC will be held and we will continue our protest,” he added.
