The petitioner stated that the Kudamurutti river faced significant pollution primarily from urban sewage and sullage discharged from localities in Trichy district, including areas such as Sanjay Gandhi Nagar, Shanmuga Nagar, Fatima Nagar, Thillai Nagar and Vayalur Road. Solid waste dumping was rampant along stretches such as Konakarai Road, where household rubbish and single-use plastics were indiscriminately discarded into the river.
He stated that unplugged drainage, sullage and sewage were discharged from multiple residential localities situated on the banks of the river. Neglected by the authorities, the Kudamurutti canal was a drainage carrier for Trichy city's western parts for years. Major polluting activities in the Kudamurutti river happened within the Trichy corporation limits. It was the duty of the corporation to take steps to prevent the discharge of sewage into the river since it posed a serious threat to the people.
Hence, the petitioner moved court.
