MADURAI:

Madurai Kamaraj University

is planning to sign memoranda of understanding with 100 foreign universities to bring international students and faculty to the campus.

A criterion to become one among the top universities in the world is that at least 10% of students and faculty should be from foreign countries.

The university recently signed memoranda of understanding with universities in Malaysia and

Sri Lanka

for joint cooperation, during vice-chancellor

P P Chellathurai

’s visit to those countries.

Chellathurai told reporters that

MKU

had signed an MoU with

Sri Lankan Eastern University

which is considered national centre for excellence in higher education and research by the Sri Lankan government.

The MoU will enable these two universities to collaborate on joint research, student exchange programmes and faculty exchange and knowledge sharing.

As the first step, there will be an international conference titled ‘Higher Education as Tool for Community Empowerment’ at MKU jointly conducted by Eastern University and MKU. “It will be a first of its kind international conference in Madurai Kamaraj University”, the VC said.

MKU has also signed an MoU with Binary University in Malaysia which excels in two streams such as management studies and entrepreneurial studies. Students from 60 countries are studying in the university.

The university has signed an MoU to start MA Tamil programme in Binary University. In turn, the Malaysian university will start an MSc programme in social entrepreneurship where the expertise of Binary University will be utilised here, the VC said.

The Malaysian university has also agreed to provide online content to train students and villagers on entrepreneurial skills. MKU has adopted 421 villages identifying 2,000 youngsters from the villages for skill development.

The university is also planning to construct an international hostel to attract foreign students and faculty. “We need hostel facilities on a par with international standards, and MKU will construct one in future,” Chellathurai said.
