History-sheeter shot in leg after attacking inspector in Sivaganga
Sivaganga: Sivaganga district police shot and apprehended an A+ category history-sheeter after he allegedly attacked a police inspector while resisting arrest on Saturday evening.The accused, Oorkavalan of Michaelpatnam, was wanted in connection with three pending non-bailable warrants. Acting on specific intelligence, a police team led by Manamadurai Inspector Kumaravel Pandian, who also holds additional charge of Thiruppachethi station, traced him to an area near the Kanoor cremation ground. When police attempted to arrest him, Oorkavalan allegedly attacked Inspector Kumaravel Pandian in a bid to escape. The officer initially fired a warning shot in the air, but the suspect continued the assault, police said. The inspector then opened fire in self-defence, injuring Oorkavalan in his right leg. He was overpowered and taken into custody. He was given first aid at the government primary health centre in Thiruppuvanam and later referred to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai for further treatment. Police said Oorkavalan has 33 criminal cases pending against him, including three murder cases, two attempts to murder, and cases related to ganja smuggling, assault and illegal possession of weapons.
