Tirunelveli: Five people sustained injuries in an accident involving a govt bus and a stationary tractor near Panagudi in Tirunelveli district on Monday morning.
Police said that a govt bus, heading towards Nagercoil from Tirunelveli, was on its way on the Tirunelveli-Nagercoil four-lane highway. When the bus neared Panagudi, it lost control and rammed into the rear of a paddy-laden tractor that reportedly broke down and was parked on the highway.
The collision was so intense that the tractor was severely damaged. Driven by the momentum of the crash, both vehicles veered off the main carriageway and lunged onto the adjacent service road.
The force of the impact caused the paddy bags in the tractor to scatter across the highway. The accident resulted in the injury of five, including the tractor driver. They were rushed to a nearby govt hospital for treatment.
Upon receiving information, Panagudi police rushed to the spot to coordinate rescue efforts. The accident caused a temporary bottleneck on the busy highway as scattered paddy bags and vehicle debris blocked the lanes.
Police personnel eventually cleared the stretch and restored the flow of traffic.
A case was registered by Panagudi Police, and further investigation is underway.
