Engineer, 27, honeytrapped, robbed

MADURAI: An

engineer

from Tuticorin district fell for a ploy devised by a gang of three youths from the city and lost his iPhone and cash worth Rs 7,400 he carried on him. The 20-year-old men lured the victim to a honeytrap through a dating website.


Based on a complaint from the engineer, a case was registered with the Teppakulam police station and the gang was arrested. The accused were identified as P Shanmuga Guru, U Udayakumar and B Ajithkumar from Anupanadi. The cash and mobile phone were recovered and the trio produced before a judicial magistrate who sent them to prison.

According to the police, the gang trapped Santhosh (name changed), a 27-year-old mechanical engineer working in Madurai, through a dating website. Santhosh was browsing the site looking for a call girl when the gang established contact with him posing as a woman. They had installed an app to convert the male voice into female voice and interacted with him. As directed by them, Santhosh reached Teppakulam late on Monday night from where a youth picked him up on a two-wheeler. He was told that the woman was waiting at Iravathanallur tank. However, on reaching there, he could see only two more people joining them. The trio took away his phone and cash at knife point and left him behind. tnn
