MLA Kulbir Singh Zira on Congress notice, under Akali Dal fire

FEROZEPUR: Two days after he boycotted a government event and accused the police of protecting the liquor mafia, MLA Kulbir Singh Zira was on Monday served a show-cause notice by the Punjab Congress and was accused by an SAD leader of pressuring the police for protecting a proclaimed offender.

In response to Zira’s claims at the oath-taking ceremony of panchayat members on Saturday, a Ferorzepur-based liquor contractor also called a press conference and accused the legislator of demanding Rs 50 lakh from him for continuing his business in the constituency.

Zira rubbished the contractor and the SAD’s allegations. He said he would be meeting Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar to clarify himself. “My statement has been distorted. I did not say anything against the party. Almost 70% of the drug trade has been checked,” he said.

In the notice, the Congress has asked the legislator to explain his outburst at the event. A SAD leader from Zira, Avtar Singh Minna, released a photograph of the MLA with Ginni Sodhi, a proclaimed offender in a murder case. He said the MLA was protecting Sodhi. Zira claimed that the liquor contractor was levelling “baseless allegations” to protect the cops who had been accused of shielding him. He said Minna’s claims were politically motivatred. Menawhile, Zira met Punjab DGP Suresh Arora in the evening to submit complaints of 30 supporters facing false police cases.
