Man plummets to death during gurdwara service

Ludhiana: A 47-year-old man lost his life on Tuesday morning after falling from a height of at least 60 feet while changing the Nishan Sahib (holy flag) at Gurudwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha in the Kartar Nagar locality of Atam Nagar. The tragic mishap reportedly occurred when the pulley cable intended for support snapped suddenly. The victim, identified as Maninder Singh, fell onto a temporary shed before being rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.The incident took place as numerous devotees visited the Gurudwara to celebrate the Baisakhi festival. Maninder was a married man and operated a grocery store to support his family. His brother, Gurpreet Singh, stated that Maninder had been performing this specific 'sewa' for more than ten years. Gurpreet attributed the fatal fall to systemic negligence, alleging that the supporting cable broke because it was rusted and poorly maintained."We have been told the cable was rusted and not properly maintained. There were no safety belts or precautions in place," Gurpreet alleged. While the family points toward equipment failure and a lack of safety gear, official preliminary findings offer a different perspective. Inspector Jaswinder Singh, SHO of the Model Town police station, stated that the initial probe suggests the man simply lost his balance and fell.As of Tuesday afternoon, the victim's family had not yet lodged a formal police complaint regarding the incident. The SHO clarified that the police department is prepared to proceed with a formal investigation and take appropriate action once an official complaint is received.
