Gill Road gridlock tests public patience
Ludhiana: The commuters while passing through Gill Road are passing through a tough time as already for over a month one side of the road and at the other side water supply lines are also being laid. The commuters passing through the road, however, have lost their patience and they claimed that work is moving at a snail's pace. Some adjoining roads are also closed for the movement of vehicles, and traffic jams are being witnessed. The shopkeepers at the road are also troubled with ongoing work.At this road, the water supply lines under the surface water project are also being laid, and leakage is also taking place at regular intervals. The deputy mayor Prince Johar visited Gill Road on Sunday to review the ongoing work. A city resident and activist Kuldeep Singh Khaira said, "Already a complaint was filed with the vigilance department regarding previously poor-quality Gill Road, and the officials started construction again. And even now work is stalled for the past six days." He said the public is facing a tough time while passing through Gill Road as this is closed and adjoining roads are also closed now. He said the officials should have taken roads one by one.He said he demanded a joint inspection and proper documentation of the existing damaged road, the cost of re-construction should be recovered from the contractor(s) and responsible officials, the ongoing vigilance inquiry should be concluded in a strictly time-bound manner, and disciplinary and legal action should be initiated against all responsible persons.Meanwhile, a resident of Civil Lines, Radhey Shyam Sharma said, "I went to that side for some work on Saturday and it took almost two hours to reach the destination as there is a lot of traffic jam at that side. The officials should complete the work as soon as possible because it is a major road for the city residents." He said there are many other areas as well where roads are in poor shape and there is a need to pay attention towards the same.21-day curing period leaves commuters irkedThe SDO of Zone C, Bhupinder Singh, said, "It will take at least two more months to complete work of Gill Road because we are taking it in intervals and as cemented road is being constructed, we need to keep selected stretches closed for 21 days at least." He said the public should support the civic body only then they will be able to provide good quality roads to them.
