District adds over 20k new voters to its electoral rolls

Ludhiana: The Ludhiana district administration has enrolled more than 20,000 new voters since March this year, which it says was the result of activities carried out under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation programme, also known as SVEEP.As per the recent report of the district election office, which has data from March 1 to April 4, as many as 21,768 new voters have been enrolled in the 14 Vidhan Sabha segments of the Ludhiana district.It’s pertinent to mention that only nine segments from the district come under the Ludhiana Lok Sabha constituency, while the remaining five are part of the Fatehgarh Sahib seat.The data suggests that of these new voters, 17,448 fall in the 19+ age group, whereas 4,320 are between 18 and 19 years of age.As per officials, those in the 18-19 bracket are considered as ‘young voters’, whereas the ones enrolled in the 19+ age group could even include elderly voters.Among the constituencies, the data shows, the highest number of new voters across all age groups is in Ludhiana South (3,495), followed by Sahnewal (3,084) and Ludhiana East (2,799).The data also shows that maximum voters from the 18-19 age group have been added to Sahnewal constituency (529), followed by Ludhiana South (500) and Gill (485).As per another report containing the data till April 4, Gill constituency continues to have the highest number of voters in the district (2,75,483), followed by Sahnewal (2,68,784) and Ludhiana East (2,28,469). Raikot has the lowest number of voters among the Vidhan Sabha constituencies at 1,47,567. There are 26,73,377 voters in the district of whom, 14,24,851 are males, 12,48,382 are females and 144 belong to the third gender.ADC (general) Amit Sareen said the increase in new voters was due to the efforts put in by the officials. “Camps were organised in around 20 colleges, where 150 lecturers and professors were deputed as SVEEP officers. Drives were also carried out to encourage voters in the 19+ category. New voters can enrol themselves till May 4 and vote in the Lok Sabha elections on June 1,” he added.Aditya Sehgal, 21, a first-time voter from BRS Nagar, said he was “very excited as well as nervous”. “The nervousness is because I have yet to analyse whom to vote for, but I am sure about the ideas and ideologies which I want in my candidate.”However, if the previous election’s data is to be seen, there were 37,498 voters in the 18-19 age group in the district at that time. Among the Vidhan Sabha segments, the number of such voters was highest in Gill (4,268), followed by Sahnewal (3,849) and Dakha (3,640).
