LUDHIANA: With no clue about the main accused who escaped from police custody, Dugri police are happy with the recovery from the second accused. On Wednesday, Dugri police recovered 840g gold worth Rs26 lakh, and Rs5.55 lakh from a thief arrested on 23 June. Moreover, the police department released a pressnote on this recovery. However, they are
keeping mum
over the absconding main accused who fled from outside the Dugri police station.
On 22 June, Dugri police arrested a thief Mani Kumar (30), who was booked in eight
theft
cases. On the next day, they took Mani for recovery and got Rs4 lakh in cash and 400g gold. The police also arrested his brother Sunny Kumar (27), who was his partner in crime, and booked him in two theft cases. As soon as the police team of four officials lead by ASI Gurmail Singh reached outside the police station with the recovery and both the accused, Sunny started complaining of a severe stomach-ache. When all officials got diverted towards Sunny, Mani fled from there, taking advantage of the situation.
For four long days, senior police officials kept mum about this, but on Wednesday, assistant
commissioner
of police
Ramandeep Singh Bhullar, and SHO at the Dugri police station, inspector Ashok Kumar, conducted a conference to share their achievement of recovery.
ACP Bhullar said: “With the arrest of Sunny, the police have managed to recover Rs5.55 lakh in cash, and 840g gold. Besides, 230g artificial jewellery has also been recovered. Sunny has been booked in two theft cases, while Mani in eight theft cases.” Further, Bhullar added that the gold and cash were buried by the accused near Dugri bridge, and out of a total Rs5.55 lakh, Rs1.2 lakh were buried in a vacant plot of Pratap Singh Wala on Hambran Road.
When questioned about no action against the cops for their negligence in letting the main accused escape, ACP Bhullar said: “I agree it is negligence. However, considering the track record of the official, and recovery from this case, the negligence can be ignored.” Commissioner of police Sukhchain Singh Gill said: “I am unaware of the incident in which a thief escaped from police custody, as I was on leave. I will get it checked, and the required action will be taken.”
