succumbed to prolonged illness at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow at around 9.30pm on Saturday evening. He was 89.

Ji breathed his last today. He was admitted in the

Intensive Care Unit

(ICU) of the SGPGI on July 4 in critical condition. He died due to sepsis and multi organ failure,” an official statement from the hospital read.




Incumbent chief minister Yogi Adityanath rushed to the hospital even before the announcement was made.

Prior to that, he had visited SGPGI in the evening to take stock of Singh's condition.



Paying rich tributes to Singh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was a "veteran administrator, grassroots level leader and great human."

"Generations to come will remain forever grateful to Kalyan Singh Ji for his contributions towards India’s cultural regeneration. He was firmly rooted in Indian values and took pride in our centuries old traditions," he tweeted.



Chief minister Adityanath has announced a three-day state mourning.

The veteran BJP leader, who also served as the governor of Rajasthan, had been under treatment for the past 48 days.

SGPGI director Prof RK Dhiman said that Singh was under the care of senior consultants.

Insiders revealed that Singh’s ventilatory support was increased after his blood pressure fell on Thursday.

At around 8pm, his blood pressure fell to extremely low levels.

The former

CM

had taken ill on July 3 when he was admitted to the Ram Manohar

Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences

after he complained of reduced consciousness and renal infection.

While under treatment, Singh’s blood pressure went up to dangerous levels and he was later sent to SGPGI.

Singh was the chief minister of UP when the Babri mosque was demolished in December 1992. He stepped down from the post the same evening.
