National Doctor's Day 2023: A journey of healing, compassion, dedication
By Dr Abhishek Shukla
Being a doctor is a calling to serve humanity, not merely a career decision. We are indoctrinated with a strong sense of purpose from the first day of medical school -- to relieve pain, advance health, and save lives. As medical professionals, we embark on a lifelong journey of healing, compassion, and dedication.
We recognize that the confidence our patients have in us is priceless, and we work tirelessly to uphold that confidence. Medicine is both an art and a science. It requires a blend of knowledge, skill, intuition, and empathy.
As doctors, we continually expand our understanding of medical advancements, staying abreast of cutting-edge research and technology. However, we also appreciate the importance of the human connection, recognizing that behind every illness, there is a person with fears, hopes, and dreams.
One of the greatest joys as a doctor is witnessing the transformative power of healing. We have the privilege of helping patients recover from illness, manage chronic conditions, and regain their quality of life. Seeing the smile on a patient's face as they overcome adversity reminds us why we chose this path -- to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Alongside the joy of healing, we also bear the weight of immense responsibility. Each patient's life is entrusted to our care, and we are acutely aware of the impact our decisions have on their well-being. We carry the weight of making critical choices, navigating complex medical situations, and providing guidance during difficult times.
This responsibility humbles us and pushes us to continually strive for excellence.
Today, I want to share a message from the perspective of a geriatric doctor, celebrating the wisdom, compassion, and unwavering commitment we bring to our profession. Geriatric doctors understand that aging is not merely a process of decline, but a remarkable journey filled with wisdom, resilience, and unique healthcare needs.
We embrace the privilege of caring for older adults and strive to enhance their quality of life, ensuring they age with dignity, independence, and grace. Every patient we encounter holds a wealth of life experiences and stories, and we cherish the opportunity to be a part of their journey.
We recognize that older adults often face a multitude of physical, cognitive, and social challenges. As geriatric doctors, we not only focus on diagnosing and treating medical conditions but also take into account the individual's goals, values, and preferences. We collaborate with patients, their families, and an interdisciplinary team to create comprehensive care plans that address their unique needs.
Compassion and empathy lie at the core of geriatric medicine. We understand the emotional and psychological impact that aging and chronic illness can have on our patients. Geriatric doctors take time to truly listen, fostering an environment where patients feel heard, validated, and understood. By building strong relationships based on trust and respect, we are better equipped to address their concerns and provide meaningful support.
On this Doctors' Day, I want to express my admiration and gratitude to my fellow doctors. Our shared dedication to the well-being of older adults creates a supportive and collaborative community. Together, we exchange knowledge, learn from each other's experiences, and inspire one another to continually improve our practice. Let us celebrate the remarkable contributions of doctors and the positive impact we have on the lives of our patients.
