Metro push to ease congestion

Commuters in Prayagraj can expect relief from rising traffic congestion as the city moves towards a Metro system aimed at streamlining urban transport and improving daily travel across key residential and commercial areas. (AI image)

2/7

Network expanded to 60 km

The proposed Metro network has been expanded to nearly 60 km from the earlier 44 km plan, with the inclusion of key stoppages such as the airport and the Sangam area, significantly widening the system’s reach. (AI image)

3/7

Shift to full metro rail system

In a major change, the project will now be implemented as a full-fledged Metro Rail instead of the initially planned MetroLite system, driven by financial viability and the availability of domestically manufactured coaches and systems. (AI image)

4/7

More stations, higher cost

The revised plan increases the number of stations from 39 to 45, with the total project cost expected to cross Rs 12,000 crore, reflecting the scale-up in connectivity and infrastructure. (AI image)

5/7

Two corridors planned

The Metro will run along two corridors—Bamrauli to Jhunsi City Lake, now extended to around 39 km, and Shantipuram to Chheoki spanning about 21 km—covering key parts of the city. (AI image)

6/7

Phase 1 station rollout

In the first phase, 26 stations will come up on the Bamrauli–Jhunsi stretch, while 19 stations are planned between Shantipuram and Chheoki, with stoppage time at each station expected to be one to two minutes. (AI image)

Work timeline and approvals

Track-laying work is expected to begin in August, while state approval is likely between April and May. A fresh survey will also be conducted to finalise the locations of newly added stations. (AI image)
