‘Jai Jagannath’ reverberates in air as holy chariots roll out

Lucknow: The chants of ‘Jai Jagannath’, ‘Jai Balbhadra’, ‘Jai Subhadra’ along with ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ reverberated across the city as people dressed in yellow participated in Jagannath Rath Yatra on Sunday.While some walked barefoot pulling the chariot, others swept the roads ahead of the yatra and others showered flowers. The annual ceremonial procession involves three chariots of Lord Jagannath and his siblings – Balbhadra and Subhadra which are taken out to grace mankind.At Mahant Shatrughna Das Rath Yatra in Marwadi Gali, Aminabad several people stood in a queue with the rope attached to the Rath in hands. This year, the committee celebrated the centenary celebrations.Nandlal Upadhyay (42), who brought her daughters Priyanshi (11) and Pranvi (7), during the yatra, said, “I used to participate in this yatra as a kid and today, I feel happy to make my kids accustomed to our traditions.” Two Raths decorated with floral decorations carrying Subhadra and Balbhadra along with one specially decorated in the form of a swan carrying Lord Jagannath was part of yatra taken out by Sri Sri Jagannath Rath Yatra and Navratri committee from Badi Kaliji Mandir in Chowk. Ravishankar Tiwari (58), who attended the yatra with his wife Mani Tiwari (52), said, “We visit this yatra every year. We have also visited Jagannath Puri but every time I come here, I have tears of joy,” said Tiwari.At a yatra taken out by International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon), the Hari Kirtan along with people dressed as gods and goddesses added to the grandeur of the yatra.Shilpi Gupta (37), who attended a Rath Yatra for the first time, said, “It was a divine experience. I was excited to see how God comes out to bless devotees during the yatra.” At a yatra taken out from Radha Madhav Mandir the sibling trio was taken out on a chariot decorated with a replica of heads of four horses. At Gaudiya Math the yatra was taken out in a traditional manner while the idols were taken out on a silver chariot at Chardham Rath Yatra.
