Ex-UP minister back in BSP fold
LUCKNOW:
Singh and his brother had switched from SP to Congress ahead of the 2019
“Singh is an extremely influential Thakur leader in Basti and his return, along with his brother, will guarantee at least three seats for BSP in the 2022 assembly polls,” said a senior BSP member. He said that Singh enjoyed tremendous clout in the district, even though there were comparatively less Thakurs in the region. His son is currently a zila panchayat president.
Singh had left BSP in 2003 to become a minister in the Mulayam government. He was with SP till 2019, having been dropped once from the cabinet by Akhilesh Yadav in 2016 along with Gayatri Prajapati on corruption charges.
Sources in BSP said that Singh had wanted to contest the 2019 general elections from Basti on an SP ticket but the seat went to BSP. At that point, Singh and his brother moved to Congress. On Thursday, when they joined BSP, Singh said that Congress was a party of ‘mathadheesh’ and it was his biggest mistake to join the party.
